The Appling County Pirates had two region contests this week against the top two teams in region 2AA. On Tuesday, the Pirates traveled to Tattnall County High School to play the Battle Creek Warriors. The Pirates came out in the first quarter on fire as they opened the game with a 10 – 2 run. The Warriors would make a run of their own late in the first to come within one point of the Pirates.
The second quarter would see the Pirates and Warriors trading baskets in a very fast paced game. The Pirates went into half time down by 4. The Pirates shot 80 percent from the floor for the 1st quarter and 68 percent for the half. The Warriors came out in the 3rd and took control of the game.
The Pirates came back strong with a 25 point showing in the fourth, but were unable to come away with the win losing 64 – 76.
Leading the Pirates in scoring was senior Patrick Wright with 19 points, junior Ibn Sumner with 12 points, freshman C.J. Alexander with nine points and freshman Kevin Johnson with seven points. Senior Desmone Harris and Freshman Davonte Wilkerson were active on the boards racking up 20 rebounds between the two.
The week would not get any easier as the Pirates traveled to Vidalia to take on the number 5 team in the state, the Vidalia Indians. The Indians controlled the game from the tip, but the Pirates answered several Indian runs to keep it close early. The Pirates fought hard and never quit, but were unable to come up with the upset as the Indians won 45 – 65. Leading scorers for the Pirates were: Patrick Wright with 11 points, C.J. Alexander with 7 points, sophomore Jordan Vann with nine points and Kevin Johnson with six points.
The Pirates will travel to Pierce County on Friday, January 28.
The will host McIntosh County Academy on Saturday, January 29. During the game former Pirate great Frankie King will be honored, as Appling County High School will be retiring his jersey. Please come out for this memorable occasion.
