The Appling County Food Processing Plant will be in operation again this summer to provide the citizens of Appling and surrounding counties the opportunity to put up fresh fruits and vegetables. Costs for processing will be $.55 per 401 can (quart size), $1.00 per tray for blanching, $.75 per quart for corn, and $3.00 per bushel for shelling peas and beans. The plant will be open at 7:00 a.m. each day of operation and all food will need to be in the plant no later than 11:00 a.m. Customers are expected to perform the necessary washing, peeling, shucking or other steps needed to prepare their food for processing. Plant personnel will be available to assist in cooking and sealing the products. The food processing plant will be open on the following days, June 8-10, 15-17, 22-24, and 28-30, July 1, 5-8, 14-15, and 18-22.
The processing plant will also open later in the fall for peanut season on dates yet to be determined.
Any changes to this schedule will be announced in the newspaper and on the radio.
The Appling County Food Processing Plant is located immediately behind the Field House at the West end of Jimmy Swain Stadium. Access to the Food Processing Plant is through the entrance between the Appling County High School and Appling Elementary Complex. Follow the new paved road around behind the new high school.
