Big Red performed wonderfully. He loves Interstates where he can put his head in the wind and lope to his satisfaction. He happily strutted his stuff when he sprinted through Jacksonville and headed down I-95 to Daytona Beach. The high performance super Mustang was beside himself. B. J. kept cautioning me to “hold him back”.
When I reined him off I-95 onto the International Raceway Boulevard and pointed him toward the beach he was really feeling his oats. He reared and neighed defiantly as we passed the International Raceway where the NASCAR greats perform.
It is a straight shot from I-95 to the seashore of dynamic Daytona Beach. If you don’t watch the turns, the Raceway Boulevard will lead you right into the surf. However, Daytona Beach is an old beaten path for us and we would not miss our turn.
Crossing the U. S. 1 and the Halifax River brought us to A1A/ Atlantic Boulevard or as the locals familiarly know it “The Daytona Beach Strip” where we turned left for about four blocks to the fabulous Wyndham Ocean Walk Resort right smack dab on the beach.
Big Red pranced playfully along the strip in fine form. I pulled him into the driveway and found a hitching post while B. J. and I picked up our keys and parking permit. The pretty receptionist smiled and said cheerily, “We have everything ready for you” as she handed us our packet. Big Red whimpered with joy as he rode us up to the seventh story-parking garage.
A short time later, we were settled into our cozy tenth floor condo that would be our home on Daytona Beach for the next five days. With a great view of the beach and the blue/green Atlantic, we were elated. We had spent a lot of time at Ocean Walk and we felt right at home.
Ocean Walk is an imposing scene on Daytona Beach. There are two towers: the south tower rises nineteen floors and the north tower rises twenty-four floors. Not only does Ocean Walk dominate the view along the Boardwalk on Daytona Beach, it is one of the most prominent beach resorts in Florida. Ocean Walk is not just a stop on the way to a destination; it is a destination. At Ocean Walk, fun, food, sun and surf surrounds us. Some of the finest restaurants in the world are within walking distance of our condo. If you don’t want to leave the building to dine, we have our own stylish restaurant or you can stock your pantry, cook-your-own and eat dinner on the patio.
Anxious to get some walking in before supper, we boarded the elevator and descended to the lobby, crossed the sprawling atrium and exited through the big glass doors to the swimming pool area.
For those who love to swim and play in a pool or just lounge in a comfortable poolside recliner and soak up the sun, Ocean Walk has it all. We have two huge pools replete with a water slide, a sauna, a flowing “river” where you can tube to your heart’s content all in a setting of adorable palms to give it a tropical atmosphere with the ocean only a few yards away.
A key card is absolutely necessary to get around in Ocean Walk. We always keep our key card handy. We carded ourselves out of the pool area and bogged into the glistening white sand of Daytona Beach; it felt good.
Lovely Daytona Beach stretches for miles along the Florida coast. Beach lovers from around the world pick Daytona as their favorite beach.
The ocean was calm. There were boats of every description from small fishing boats to big cabin cruisers playing around offshore. A couple of adventure lovers were parasailing high above.
One of our favorite places on the beach is the Daytona Beach Pier Restaurant; it extends from the boardwalk a long distance out into the water and in addition to a nice eatery, it provides a great view of Daytona Beach and has a gift shop where one can plunder forever and spend some big buck$$$$$. There is also a sky-lift that carries excitement seekers up and out over the water. This is our favorite ride at Daytona Beach—when it is open. When we reached the Daytona Beach Pier Restaurant, to our dismay, we found it closed for remodeling. Well, the savory aroma of cooking food drifting along the beach reminded us that it was time for supper. Our vacation on Daytona Beach was getting off to a great start.
