James W. “Smokey” Howard, Sr., 84, joined his Heavenly Father on Thursday, February 27, 2014. Graveside services were held on Saturday, March 1 at 2:00 p.m. in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. The family met friends following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Sylvester, Lottie Moon or Annie Armstrong Missions, 207 N. Isabella St., Sylvester, GA 31791.
The Rev. Howard, son of the late Willis Edgar Howard, Sr. and Maggie Dean Samuels Howard, was born in Waynesboro. He earned his Doctorate Degree in Ministry from Luther Rice Seminary in Jacksonville, FL. Fulfilling his call to the Ministry, the Rev. Howard served as pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Macon, First Baptist Church, Warrenton, West Highland Baptist Church, Macon, First Baptist Church, Colquitt, Eastern Heights Baptist Church, Columbus and First Baptist Church, Baxley. He then served with the Georgia Baptist Convention Stewardship and Annuity Department, retiring February 29, 1996. The Rev. Howard was a member of First Baptist Church, Sylvester.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Eutonah Lea SerVoss Howard of Sylvester; his children, Deana Ruth May of Burnsville, N.C., Monabeth H. (Glenn) Parkman of Sylvester, Jimmy (Donna) Howard of Baxley, Mark Howard of Sylvester, Jay (Ellen) Howard of Waycross; eight beloved grandchildren, Travis May, Dana May, Leanna May, Leigh P. Vickery, Render Parkman, Glenna Ruth P. Carlisle, Walt Howard and Lauren Howard; and three great grandchildren, Logan, Maggie and Luke also survive.
