The Appling County Pirates (5-0 Overall, 3-0 Region 1-AAA) made the two-hour journey to Savannah on Friday, February 28 to face off against the Johnson High Atom Smashers (1-5, 0-3).
Griffith Faircloth started the game for the Pirates, pitched one inning and struck out the side. Stacy Davis entered the game in the second inning and recorded three strikeouts. Mason Parker pitched the final two innings of the game and recorded five strikeouts. The pitching staff dealt consistent strikes as the offense scored 17 runs in four innings. The Pirates had nine hits in the game. Key offensive players included Tyler Sapp (1-1, three RBI), Mason Parker (1-2, RBI), Dylan Crosby (2-3, two RBI), and Gage Patton (1-4, RBI). Other offensive contributors were Jake Britt (1-3), Griffith Faircloth (1-2), and Connor Simmons (1-3). The Pirates left Savannah with a 17-0 region victory over Johnson High.
The Pirates would host Islands High School for their third region game of the season on Tuesday, March 4.
The Pirates and Islands High Sharks (2-3, 1-2) braced themselves for a cold, wet, and windy game on Tuesday night. Senior ace lefty Connor Simmons started the game for the Pirates. Connor pitched three and a third innings, recorded nine strikeouts, and allowed only one hit. The Sharks had scored three runs when lefthander Stacy Davis entered in relief of Simmons. Davis pitched the remainder of game for the Pirates and recorded four strikeouts with effective off-speed. Davis allowed only two hits.
The Pirate offense came alive on Tuesday! The whole lineup swung a hot bat as the Pirates strung together thirteen hits. Junior Cody Thomas was a catalyst for the offense stroking three hits and two RBI on the night. Coming off the bench to pinch hit, Casey Griffin stepped in the box with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Casey roped a clutch single down the left field line that scored two runs. Other key offense was contributed by Connor Simmons (3-5, 2RBI), Jake Britt (2-4, RBI), Mason Parker (2-4, 2B, 2RBI), Gage Patton (1-4, RBI) and Triston Carter (1-4). The dust settled with the Pirates on top, 13-4.
Now 3-0 in the region, the Pirates turn their focus to Southeast Bulloch (2-2, 2-0). The Pirates will travel to Brooklet on Friday, March 7 to vie for their fourth region victory.
