Appling County High School (ACHS) Principal Dr. Gene Starr presented the following information regarding the ACHS STAR Student at the Baxley-Appling County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting held on Tuesday, January 14, at the Baxley Church of God Social Hall.
The Professional Association of Educators (PAGE) is the state coordinator and primary sponsor for the STAR Program. The Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor the state program, as well as the Baxley-Appling County Chamber of Commerce.
The Appling County High School student selected as STAR Student is the senior who has the highest score on one test date on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT). In addition, the STAR student must be in the upper ten percent of his or her graduating class based on cumulative average.
This year’s STAR Student has earned a cumulative average of 100.69 while taking the most challenging courses offered at our school. He spent the first semester of his senior year as a full time ACCEL student in the dual enrollment program with Valdosta State University, taking college courses on campus and receiving credit with ACHS.
His score on the SAT was a 2130 out of a possible 2400. He has earned several awards such as the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, the University of Georgia Certificate of Merit, and the Bausch & Lomb Science Award. He was selected as a chemistry finalist for the Governor’s Honors Program. He was one of the thirty high school student in the state to attend the program this past summer at Valdosta State University. This young man participated in numerous activities while at ACHS: Science Quiz Bowl team and the Science Olympiad, Technology Student Association, Appling Envirothon team, Math team, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is an active member of Bethel Free Will Baptist Church. He has been an inspirational speaker at many churches and youth events in his community.
This outstanding young man has been accepted to the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Valdosta State University. He plans to major in biology at one of the aforementioned institutions in the fall.
It is a pleasure for me to present the ACHS 2014 STAR Student Award to Kyler Roy Herrington, the son of Jeff and Suzanne Herrington and the grandson of Roy and Georgia Herrington, and Annette and the late Hubert Osborne.
(Herrington selected Jaime Williams as his STAR Teacher.)
