Dalton C. Fowler, 78, of Surrency, died Monday, December 16, 2013 in The Pavilion.
Fowler was born April 6, 1935 in Appling County and was the son of the late Joel Dalton Fowler and the late Katie Carter Fowler and stepmother, Mildred Fowler. He was a member of Zion Church of God and was a 1954 graduate of Surrency High School. Fowler was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He worked with the Appling County Road Department and also knew how to earn an extra dollar in so many ways from selling carpet, furniture, produce, batteries or picking up pecans and farming. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vetanell Ahl Fowler and two sisters, Frances Herrin and Dorothy McBride.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Lori Fowler of Baxley; grandchildren, Caleb, Calyn and Caitlyn, all of Baxley; a special nephew, Ritchie and Gwen Sharpe and children, Tadd Sharpe and Lynn Sharpe; four sisters, Ima Deen (Tom) Herrin, Martha Pearl Contos, Velma Ruth Griffin and Linda (Aaron) Hutcheson; two brothers, John (Marty) Fowler and Arthur (Annette) Lightsey; and one brother-in-law, James (Myrna) Herrin.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 19 at 11:00 a.m. from Zion Church of God with the Rev. J. Stephen Statum and the Rev. Ronnie Rentz officiating and a eulogy by Lee Fowler. Interment followed in the church cemetery
Active pallbearers were Caleb Fowler, Ritchie Sharpe, Tadd Sharpe, Greg Herrin, Jeff Herrin and Thon Herrin.
Honorary pallbearers were staff of The Pavilion and all friends in attendance.
A song recorded by Mr. Fowler’s wife, Vetanell was played along with other musical selections rendered by the Rev. J. Stephen, Pamela Statum and Shelia Kennedy.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
