Dear Editor,
Today I received a check for $2.50 from the National Cancer Research Center. The letter asked that I return the check to them along with my gift of $10.00 or more. The form that I was to return shows “2011 Baxley Area Annual Fund Drive.”
Warns others about sending money
I read the fine print on the back of the letter and learned that this group raises funds for the Walker Cancer Research Institute and last year raised a total of $12,697,567. Only 4.2% went to research program services (whatever that is). The remainder of the money went to fundraising and education through fundraising appeals.
The fine print also states that Walker Cancer Research Institute is not affiliated with the American Institute for Cancer Research, Cancer Fund of America, American Cancer Society or Pacific West Cancer Fund.
If anyone else in the Baxley area received this solicitation, I hope they will think carefully before sending this group any money.
I plan to cash the $2.50 check and give the money to the American Cancer Society so that it will be put to good use here in our own community.
