Harry Emmett McMillan
Harry Emmett McMillan, 85, lovingly known as “Mac” by all who knew him, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011 in Tattnall Nursing Center in Reidsville after an extended illness. Mac was an avid fisherman and loved living at Eason’s Bluff on the Altamaha River after retiring from Southern Bell Telephone Company with 37 years of dedicated service, retiring as local manager. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps, a veteran of World War II having served at Iwo-Jima, the occupation of Japan and the Volcano Islands.
Mr. McMillan was a native of Valdosta and had resided in Baxley for 47 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Ora Lee McMillan, two brothers, Carlyle and Franklin McMillan and two sisters, Lila Chauncey and Mary Sue McMillan and a daughter-in-law, Barbara McMillan.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Doris Moore McMillan; one daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Steve Collins of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Jack and Marianne McMillan of Vidalia and Steve McMillan of West Palm Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, Jennifer and Matt Coleman, Jason and Renee McMillan, Kristofer Griffin, Melissa Donahue and Summer McMillan; nine great-grandchildren, Bryce Branch, Dylan Coleman, Baylee Coleman, Mattelyn Coleman, Ryan Yielding, Haley Griffin, Hunter Griffin, Gillian Anne McMillan and Ally Donahue.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at Swain Funeral Home in Baxley with the Rev. Wayne Williamson officiating. Delmus Hale and Jason McMillan delivered eulogies. Interment followed in Omega Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jason McMillan, Kristofer Griffin, Matt Coleman, Bryce Branch, Niles Reddick, Harold Reddick, Mike Papacsi and Steve Collins.
Musical selections were rendered by Heather Hale and Glynda Reeves.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Georgia Sheriff’s Boy’s Ranch, P. O. Box 100 Hahira, GA 31632 or to Southern Care Hospice, 2311 East 1st Street, Suite B, Vidalia, GA 30474.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
