Mrs. Alene Martin Rooks transitioned from earth to glory into eternity on Monday, September 16, 2013 at her residence in Baxley surrounded by her loving and caring family. She entered a place where none will be able to escape. Her work is finished – our Mother will be missed by many. She was such a giving, loving and praying person.
Mrs. Rooks was born to the late Frank Martin, Sr. and the late Josie Johnson Martin in Ambrose (Coffee County) on Thursday, March 10, 1932. She joined the First African Baptist Church at a very young age and continued to serve faithfully for many years. Alene attended the Appling County Schools. She was united in Holy matrimony to the late Pernell Rooks.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rooks was preceded in death by Richard McCall, Sr. and her brothers, Frank Martin, Jr. and Allen L C Martin.
Survivors include six children, Earlene Frazier of Columbus, Ruthie Mae Rooks of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Richard (Sarah) McCall of Baxley, Shirley (Delmon) Miller of Savannah, Sandra C. Rooks of Baxley and Hilda Floretta (Mitchell) Paulk of Bryan County; a brother, Clarence L. Martin; sisters, Virginia M. Smith, Gloria Martin, Betty (George) Shoultz and Sara (Bobby) Britton; brothers-in-law, Roland (Annie B.) Rooks and Norman (Joann) Rooks; sisters-in-law, Ruby Lee Rooks, Alretta Wooten, Evelyn (Isaiah) Isom and Zelene (Rev. Columbus) Burns, III; grandchildren, Alan, Lisa, Kenneth, Lawrence, Reginald, Jeffery, Stanley, Terrilyn, Stephanie, Sonya, Amber, Andre, Jarell and Micaiah; twenty-one great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, and very special friends of the family, Cindy Hatchett and Mr. and Mrs. James Twiggs.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 at First African Baptist Church, Baxley, with the Rev. C. James Carter presiding and the Rev. J. M. Blair gave the eulogy. Interment followed in Old Field Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Baxley.
Active pallbearers were Oliver Hall, Micaiah Paulk, Andre Miller, Herbert Byrd, Tyree McCall, Jarell Paulk, Lorenzo Rooks, Charles Rooks, Reginald Federick and Deandre McCall.
Honorary pallbearers were Bettye Rooks Waters, Simone Vann-White, Spanish Oaks Hospice, Eddie James Hall and the deacons of First African Baptist Church.
Musical selections were rendered by Gwen Ryals, Linda Jackson and the First African Baptist Church Choir.
Arrangements were entrusted to Brown Funeral Home.
