The Appling County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office are sponsoring basic handgun safety classes over the next couple of months and Sheriff Benny Deloach and District Attorney Jackie Johnson has asked that the community be made aware and offered an opportunity to attend. These classes will be conducted by Maj. Lee Sweat of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office and Investigator Mark Melton from the Appling County District Attorney’s Office as well as other certified firearms instructors. Both Lee and Mark have many years of experience in firearms training and other specialties and we believe that anybody interested in attending will gain some knowledge regardless of their personal expertise in the field of firearms usage.
The classes are basic so that everybody who attends can feel comfortable and know that we will not be providing any information that is beyond their individual comprehension level. It will be an opportunity to learn about the laws that govern the carry and use of a handgun or long gun. We will discuss concealed carry permits, where they can be obtained, cost and what protections the permit actually provides. There will be discussion about the different types of firearms and their proper usage. This will include our perspective of what is probably the most appropriate weapon for users, depending on their skill level and proclivity to practice with the weapon. We, of course, will provide information about the proper shooting skills necessary for individuals to be safe and proficient with a firearm.
Generally, we will conduct these training sessions in two non-consecutive days. The classroom portion will likely be on a Thursday night from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., give or take a few minutes. We do not need anybody to bring their gun or any ammunition to this portion of the training for safety reasons. Normally we will conduct the second portion of the training on the following Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. or until everybody has had an opportunity to shoot under the watchful eyes of qualified firearms instructors.
At this time, we have two sessions scheduled and any citizen who is 21 years old or orlder or who is 16 -20 but accompanied by an adult and is not a convicted felon, can attend. The dates, times and locations are at the end of this email. There is a small cost of $20.00 per student to attend the two day class. This cost is to offset the expenses of ammunition, targets, ear plugs and others things that will be provided. This cost must be paid at the first session.
We will provide handguns for the shooting portion of the training. However, if you have a handgun and want to bring it with you on day 2, you may do so but with these restrictions. Before putting the gun in your vehicle, make sure it is safe and unloaded. If you are not sure about that, just leave it in a holster and we will check it at the range. Once you arrive at the range, leave the gun in your vehicle. An instructor will go with you to your car to retrieve the gun for safety reasons.
If you are interested in attending, we need to know so that we can plan accordingly. Therefore, it is required that each person responds directly to Mark Melton at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 912-279-2868 to advise him of your desire to attend and the dates that you want to attend.
