A few weeks back Congressman John Barrow decided he would do something that I’m sure sent a chill down the backs of other representatives and senators in Washington. Barrow rolled up his sleeves and traded places with employees at businesses throughout the 12th District.
“The decisions we’re making in Washington have a direct impact on the hard working folks in the 12th District,” said Congressman Barrow. “During the August District Work Period, I had the opportunity to travel and work with folks across the region and to talk about the issues that are important to them. Folks in Washington have a lot to learn from the people in the 12th District, and I’m happy to bring our ideas to Congress.”
For several days during his August break from Washington the Congressman donned numerous outfits, hats and aprons including an UPS brown delivery outfit as he carried packages to people in and around Statesboro and Augusta. He then worked at the WalMart Distribution Center in Douglas. Barrow even poured java at a coffee shop in Augusta.
In Appling County the Congressman visited and worked with the crew at Sarah’s in the City. I feel confident that Mrs. Sarah and the crew put him through the “washer” during his experience serving hungry citizens of Appling County, pardon the pun.
It is refreshing to see a member of congress who is not scared to get out of Washington to actually find out what is going on in his district and learn what the concerns are of the citizenry he represents.
As a side note: Before Barrow reported for duty at the local restaurant, he stopped by for a quick visit with us here at The News-Banner, on a Tuesday no less. Of course on a Tuesday morning the presses are rolling and the staff usually have a little ink on their hands or clothes. I did my best to get the Congressman to join in on the fun to no avail. Maybe next time we’ll be able to get a little ink under his fingernails.
