Elizabeth (Lizzie) F. Simmons has been named the Grand Marshall for the 2013 Relay for Life Parade scheduled for Saturday, March 23.
Lizzie was born to the late John and Addie Fussell. She was married to the late James J. Simmons. She is the proud mother of seven children (three have passed away).
Lizzie started working with the American Cancer Society in the 1970’s under Mrs. Eunice, out of Waycross. They walked from house to house collecting donations all over Appling County. During that time their banquets were held in Waycross. Lizzie states it was a joy to work for the Society as long as she did.
Due to the results of a mammogram, followed by an ultrasound, Lizzie began her first battle with breast cancer in 2007. She had breast surgery December 7, 2007, radiation five days a week from January to March 2008. After a colonoscopy Lizzie continued her fight with cancer. She had colon surgery in April 2008, chemo treatments from April to August 2008. Dealing with two types of cancer was not easy for Lizzie. Taking the medicine would often cause her to swell, sometimes it would swell her eyes closed. She says her prayer was, “Whatever you see fit for me God let me be a miracle to show people what You can do, because I’m not ready to die. Honey I’ve been trucking ever since and never looked back. I went back for my checkup in October and they didn’t find ANYTHING. Now my legs want to act up but I am doing good. By His stripes I AM HEALED - To God be the Glory.”
Lizzie is a member of the First African Baptist Church of Baxley. Lizzie loves the Lord with all her heart; she is affectionately known by many as Mama Lizzie. Lizzie is a spectacular seamstress, an amazing fisherman, a fabulous dresser, a dynamic cook, and many other wonderful things.
Appling County loves you Lizzie and we’re proud to have you as our Appling County American Cancer Society Relay for Life Grand Marshal.
