Superintendent’s Report
Superintendent Scarlett Copeland informed the BOE that the Appling County School Food Nutrition Department was awarded the Golden Radish Award from State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge and Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black. The award is in honor of a commitment to support healthy, local foods in local schools.
Copeland shared that she spoke to Commissioner Gary Black about the Farm to School Program during a presentation at Branch Farm Supply on highway safety.
The BOE was informed that ACHS received the Fuel up to Play 60 grant. The grant will help fund a smoothie and parfait station, promotion materials, taste testing ingredients and supplies.
Appling County has also received a grant from The Whole Kids Foundation that will award three salad bars throughout the system.
Appling County Future Farmers of America (FFA) member Kaleb Wright was awarded second place in the Area VI Prepared Public Speaking Competition at Lanier High and will compete at the State Competition in April. Jarrett Williams placed third in Extemporaneous Public Speaking.
The ACHS HOSA Public Health Team placed second in the first round of State Competition.
ACHS and ACMS hosted the CTAE Advisory Council held at ACHS on March 11 with a large crowd in attendance including students, teachers, parents and business partners. CTAE helps to promote community involvement and planning.
Other business
The following were approved under consent agenda: contract between the BOE and Headstart was renewed; a field trip request by ACHS for the senior class to attend GradBash in Orlando on April 19; minutes from meetings held on February 7, February 11 and February 19; and a revision to long term substitute pay to allow certified personnel a set amount of absences.
A motion to change the current board policy involving public participation was approved unanimously. The policy change has to be tabled for 30 days before going into effect.
