Anna Bell Wright-Seward was born in Graham on October 23, 1910 to the late Joseph and Rozella Wright. She was the eighth of nine children.
She became a faithful member of Mt Zion C.M.E. Church at an early age, serving as a Sunday school teacher, secretary for the Knights of Moses, a Communion Stewardess, chairperson for fund-raisers, a member of the NAACP, a member of the Benevolence Club and later became the “Mother of the Church”.
In June of 1930, Mrs. Anna married the love of her life, the late Leroy Roosevelt (Johnny) Seward. To this union, the Lord blessed them with 13 children.
Mrs. Anna took pride in raising her children, instilling in them the value of prayer, hard work and a good education. To help provide for her family, she sharecropped, cleaned houses, was a sitter for Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Shuman’s children (Dr. Lula Mae Perry and Dr. David Shumans) and worked at Hazlehurst Manufacturing Company.
Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, embroidery, gardening and cooking. She loved caring for her family and helping her friends and neighbors, but there was nothing she enjoyed more than having her home full of grandchildren.
In 1989 Mrs. Anna’s health began to weaken. Following in her footsteps, her children cared for her at home, until the Lord called for her.
The Love of God quietly took Anna Bell Wright-Seward by the hand on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Jeff Davis Hospital after an extended illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her siblings and three children: Nellie Seward in 1931, Robert “Bobby” Seward in 1974 and James “John” Seward in 2012.
Those left to cherish her memories: (seven) daughters: Jacqueline (Thomas O.) Thomas, Darien, Lynette (Tommy) King, Graham, Annette Seward, Nashville, TN., Ella (Robert) Studevent, Washington, DC, Dorothy Hayes, Graham, Etta (Dewayne) Kemp, Clinton, MD, Shirley (Lennis) Johnson, Hazlehurst; (three) sons: Glenn and Richard Seward, both of Miami, FL. and Edwin “Roosevelt” Seward, Antioch, TN.; (18) grandchildren; (16) great grandchildren; (six) great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
