Children’s Miracle Network
The Children’s Miracle Network raises money for children’s hospitals all over the United States. The Dairy Queen in Baxley, with the help of the Appling County Retired Educators, organized a campaign for our closest children’s hospital, Backus Children’s Hospital. Backus Children’s Hospital is part of Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.
The committee enlisted the help of all the elementary schools and the middle school to raise money for Backus Children’s Hospital. Students collected almost $4,000 in less than a week’s time. The classroom that raised the most money in each school will receive a free lunch. Five classrooms will enjoy this reward. Also each child who brings in any amount of money is awarded a coupon for a free ice cream cone.
Backus Children’s Hospital never denies treatment to any child, even if his or her family has no insurance or means of paying for the treatment. Financial contributions from generous individuals and businesses help provide life-saving care to every child, including many from Appling County. Local support helps ensure that patients have highly skilled personnel and advanced technology available. Backus Children’s Hospital has 100 beds, the region’s only pediatric ICU, neonatal intensive care nursery and transport services, and more than 40 physician specialists, including hematologist/oncologists, dermatologists and endocrinologists.
Frieda Gruber, owner of Dairy Queen, would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Wanda Ammons for her years of hard work on this campaign for Children’s Miracle Network. Over the last eight years Wanda helped raise over $28,000. She did all the legwork from counting out the envelopes, taking them to the schools, picking them up, and counting the money. “Wanda is a special person, and Children’s Miracle network joins me in thanking her for all she has done.” In 2010 Wanda retired from this commitment, but her heart is still here. It took a committee of retired educators to replace her. They are Joy Connelley, Beverly Carter, Elizabeth Dunn, Kay Eunice, Judy Johnson, Beth Rentz, Mary Ann Rigdon and Jenean Twiggs. Frieda greatly appreciates the new committee for stepping in and continuing the job that Wanda started.
