A motion was made by Commissioner Ronnie Rentz to purchase a 2007 Buick Terraza from Kevin Carter Automotive for the amount of $12,500.00 to be used by Concerted Services. A second was made to the motion by commissioner Daryl Edwards and was approved unanimously. The vehicle will be used to deliver meals.
Sealed bids were opened for road striping and rumble strips. After reviewing the bids the commissioners asked Road Superintendent Tommy Davis to check with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) on the history of work for the bidders and to inform the commissioners at a later meeting.
A resolution to form a Board of Elections to oversee elections held in Appling County was approved unanimously. The election board will take over responsibility currently held by Probate Judge Diane Hallman.
Information was shared on the need for a new cooler at the county morgue. No action was taken.
The annual sponsorship for the Baxley Tree Fest for the amount of $1,000.00 was approved unanimously.
A request to use the City Gym and Appling County Courthouse parking lots for the Peaches to Beaches yard sale was approved unanimously. Concerns raised last year over restroom accessibility have been addressed.
Davis informed the commissioners that he would be meeting with the contractor who did some work for the county a few years ago about problems that have transpired due to the quality of the materials used. One specific problem area is Thornton Road.
Work Session – January 23
The commissioners approved a motion to change the agent of record for the health care benefits to Northwestern Health Benefit.
A motion was made by Leggett with a second from Wilkerson to make the length of the new T-ball fields 200 feet. The motion was approved unanimously.
Information was shared about future road projects including work on high hazard areas on Ben Carter and Ten Mile roads. The GDOT will be providing $800,000.00 to the project expected to be bid out in February 2013.
Information was shared about concerns over collection of solid waste billing. Information was also shared about the large amount of over due taxes.
A motion was made by Wilkerson to build the new Senior Care and Head Start building near Ernest J. Parker Park. Rentz seconded the motion with the motion being approved unanimously. The project is being funded by SPLOST.
