Baxley homeowner discovers $58,000.00 in illegal drugs
On Jan. 28 at approximately 6:24 p.m. officers met with a resident at a Pine Street address in reference to some abandoned property found on his property. On arrival the resident told officers that he had found two large cardboard boxes left at his residence that was not his. The resident told officers that he checked the boxes and its contents and discovered that they contained contraband. The resident then called and reported the finding. Upon arrival of officers, the contraband was field-tested and came back positive for marijuana. Both of the boxes were seized, and both contained a large amount of compressed marijuana.
Marijuana delivered to wrong house
The seized marijuana was transported to the police department where it was photographed, tagged and placed into evidence pending further investigation. Agents from the Georgia Drug Task Force and the drug agent for the Appling County Sheriff’s Office were contacted for assistance in the investigation process. The seized marijuana was later released to the state drug task force for further forensic processing. Both boxes of seized marijuana had a total weight of approx. 48 pounds, which has a street value of approx. $58,000.00 dollars. Chief Godfrey would like to ask that if anyone has any knowledge of these two boxes of processed marijuana to contact the Baxley Police Department, the Appling County Sheriffs Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation or the state drug task force.

Jan. 13 at approx. 3:30 p.m., answered a call to Golden Touch in reference to a burglary. On arrival the manager told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown knocked out one of the front glass doors to gain entry. The manager told officers that he was missing several cases of different kinds of beer, and a box with an undetermined amount of change.
Jan. 16 at approx. 4:20 p.m., answered a call to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. On arrival officers met with the LPCO who had a subject detained for taking some items without paying for them. Arrested in connection with this incident was Stephanie Clayton, 42, of Hazlehurst, on charges of one count theft by shoplifting and disorderly conduct.
Jan. 16 at approx. 9:00 a.m., met with a complainant at the Appling County High School in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had stolen his granddaughter’s cell phone while she was at school. The phone is described as a Samsung Galaxy 2, serial number 268435461708617054.
Jan. 18 at approx. 3:57 a.m., answered a call to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. On arrival officers met with the LPCO who had two subjects detained for taking some items without paying for them. Arrested in connection with this incident was Lauren A. Thomas, 18, and Michelle Brooke Vaughn, 23, both of Baxley, on charges of theft by shoplifting.
Jan. 20 at approx. 1:00 p.m., met with the residents at a Blackshear Highway address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the residents told officers that while they were away from home person(s) unknown entered their home and rummaged through several rooms and cabinets. Reported missing was an undetermined amount of change.
Jan. 22 at approx. 9:45 a.m., met with the resident at a Chad Claxton Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that sometime over the past weekend person(s) unknown had entered her truck that was parked in the yard and removed her son’s class ring. The ring is described as being white gold in color, with a pink stone in the center, it will have the Class of 2013 on it, and the number 23 along with the name Cameron and a cross on the sides. Its a size 9 3/4 and has his initials of CJC inside the band.
Jan. 22 at approx. 5:02 p.m., met with the residents at a Willard Street address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that while they were gone person(s) unknown entered their home, rummaged through it and removed a man?s wedding band, gold in color, with a criss cross around the band, and a small diamond in the middle, a white gold wedding ring, a gold wedding band, and a 1981 class ring with a blue stone in the center, and had the name Wendell Spell on the inside of the band, and a Pompano Beach Florida Class of 1981 class ring, with a blue stone in the center and the name Jerry Kersey inside the band, along with an undetermined amount of change.
Jan. 22 at approx. 10:48 p.m., answered a call to a Tippins Street address in reference to a domestic dispute. On arrival the officers discovered that a verbal argument had turned physical between two family members, with a brother striking his sister, knocking her to the ground. Arrested in connection with this incident was Robert J. Yawn, 36, of Baxley, on charges of battery.
Jan. 23 at approx. 8:31 p.m., answered a call to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. On arrival officers met with the LPCO whom had a subject detained for taking some items without paying for them. Arrested in connection with this incident was Amy Leigh Hutchinson, 34, of Baxley, on charges of theft by shoplifting.
Jan. 24 at approx. 11:35 a.m., answered a call to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. On arrival the officers met with the LPCO whom had a subject detained for taking some items without paying for them. Arrested in connection with this incident was David Trenton Kersey, 48, of Kite, on charges of theft by shoplifting.
Jan. 24 at approx. 4:15 p.m., answered a call to Baxley Beverage South in reference to a theft. On arrival the officers met with the clerk who had two subjects detained for taking some items without paying for them. Arrested in connection with this incident was Brian Magee, 17, of Baxley, on charges of theft by shoplifting. The other party Farley Christopher Norman, 20, also of Baxley, was charged with possession of alcohol-under-21.
Jan. 25 at approx. 2:06 a.m. answered a call to Murphy?s Oil USA in reference to a theft. On arrival the officers met with the clerk who told them that a subject had gotten a lottery ticket and tried to pay for it with a Chic Filet card and that the subject took the lottery ticket and left the business in a black in color, Acura, and was headed east on Parker Street. The vehicle was spotted by a police officer, and stopped it to inquire about the incident. The officer told the driver to follow him back to Murphy?s to clear up the incident; instead the driver took off, resulting in a chase by officers of the Baxley Police Department and backed up by deputies from the Appling County Sheriffs Office. The chase ensued into Wayne County, where Wayne County deputies laid down stop sticks, which resulted in the vehicle coming to a stop and the arrest of the driver and another passenger without further incident. Arrested in connection with this incident was Jared Norton, 20, of Brunswick, on charges of one count of giving false statements and theft by deception and a Abby Caroline Bartlett, 18, also of Brunswick, on charges of one count of fleeing or attempting to elude police officer, speeding in excess of limits, aggressive driving, improper lane change, reckless driving and false statements.
Jan. 25 at approx. 4:25 p.m., met with the residents at a Willard Street address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the residents told officers that while they were gone person(s) unknown entered their home and removed a H & R 12-gauge shotgun with a 30 inch barrel and full choke, along with a diamond necklace, that has three square drops down the necklace.
Jan. 26 at approx. 11:28 p.m., met with a complainant at Fast Trac in reference to property damage. On arrival the complainant told officers that while her vehicle was parked, person(s) unknown had threw eggs on it and put some tacks behind one of the tires.
