The talking heads were all from Wall Street and were talking about the market ‘Correction’. I do not understand this ‘Correction’ business.
When the market is going up they call it a ‘Bull’ market, but when it tanks and everyone except the insiders is losing his shirt, they call it a ‘Correction’. I thought ‘Bull’ meant bad stuff and ‘Correction’ meant good stuff. Shows how much I know. What the heck is correct about losing your shirt? Why is it called a correction? Perhaps they are speaking in Biblical terms where ‘correcting’ refers to getting the daylights beaten out of oneself by those “in the know”. I guess it serves one right for being ‘in the market’ in the first place.
I heard about a ‘Correction’ in Atkinson County back in 1932. It seems a certain Tanner man rigged explosives inside the buck barrel at his still and when the revenuers showed up and one of them lifted the lid, it went off and killed the deputy sheriff and two Federal revenue officers. This caused a ‘correction’ to be forced upon the morals of some of the wayward citizens of Atco because President Hoover sent the full weight of the Alcohol and Tobacco agency down to Atco to enforce justice for the law, or in other words, to have a ‘Correction’. The wayward souls of Atco were placed in jeopardy of starving because the only way they had to make an honest dollar was to make illicit spirits and sell it to the prohibitionists.
The only thing these wayward ones could do was stay at prayer meeting and pray the revenuers would leave so business could get back to normal. This only worked after the Tanner man was cornered and shot. He managed, though sorely wounded, to hop a train in Kirkland and head out to parts unknown. He was never heard from again, or so the story goes. I guess he got, “Corrected”.
I assume the ‘Correction’ was a failure on everyone else because things got right back to normal around Kirkland after the law left. The revenuers did not understand that it would take continuous ‘Correcting’ for certain Atco citizens to see the light because they are tough; especially when they are hungry. As one long time Kirkland resident, Stuttering Bill, put it, “C-C-C-Correctin’ is like p-p-p-praying. It makes th-th-th-thin soup.”
Mexican President Calderon chastised the U.S. from the House floor. I wish our representative or either Senator had been brave enough to shout him down by saying, “If everything is so good in Mexico, why the heck are all your people coming here? Can we go there and get everything free?”
Alas, they did not have the courage so I guess we are in for another ‘Correction’ concerning immigration.
George Bush and the Republicans led us down the wrong path and along came a man who promised to ‘Correct’ things. Jesus have mercy!
I do not know about you but I have had about all the correcting I can stand for one lifetime and my Mother provided most of that. I certainly do not need any more ‘Correcting’ from the morons in D.C., but I think some is on the way.
I may have to move to Atco; Kirkland, to be exact.
