Early in the meeting board members voted to enter into an executive session for litigation and personnel purposes. Also included in the closed meeting was Board Attorney Phillip Hartley of Harben, Hartley and Hawkins. No action was taken following the closed session.
Board members voted to continue to use Harbin, Hartley and Hawkins as the primary attorneys for the system and also use Graham Floyd as the board’s secondary local attorney. The new contract with the attorneys will run from January 2013 until December 2013.
The board approved the 2013 meeting dates and times.
Board members also approved changes to bank signature cards for the system’s banking accounts to align with recent changes.
The board agreed to be the fiscal agent for Appling County Community Connection.
Under personnel the board approved the following recommendations from Copeland. Resignations were approved for bus driver Erica Leeds and paraprofessional Donald Murray. A teacher for Appling County Middle School, Glenn Shelby, a paraprofessional at Altamaha Elementary School, Rayann Simmons, and a teacher at Appling County Primary, Sharon Flowers, were approved to be hired. A maternity leave request for Candice Shelby was approved.
The board also opened two positions at Appling County High School. The positions include a business education teacher and a physical education position. A question was raised if this would assist in helping the school go to 4 x 4 block scheduling and it was reported that this would assist in the transition. The school is currently using a 3 x 1 block scheduling.
Members approved a request from John Fogerty to host one professional wrestling match at the Appling County High School Gymnasium. The board agreed to let this be a trial run of the event. Fogerty will also have to provide proof of insurance and sign a rental agreement. The first event is planned for mid-March.
The board approved the low bid for track and field equipment for the new track facility at Appling County High School. Aluminum Athletic Equipment Company submitted the low bid of $50,657.00.
The board tabled a decision on new lighting for the track and field facility until more details can be ironed out between the school system and Georgia Power.
At a work session meeting held on January 14, 20 lucky teachers in the Appling County School System received a $50.00 gift card from WalMart as a thank you for educating the students of today and building the leaders of tomorrow. All teachers were entered into a drawing for a chance to win a gift card and the winners were Cathy Graham, Shelly Horton, Gina Eason, Janda Morris, Karen Tillman, Mandy Williams, Gayle Jones, Deja Edmund, Schvonia Starr, Amee Lewis, Cathy Ammons, Lindsay Miller, Diane Boatright, Lynn Hyers, Mary Collins, Andrea Rentz, Prscilla Haynes, Violet Marchman, Sheldon Pearce and Kristy Rozier.
