For years surgeons and operating room (OR) staff at Appling HealthCare have maneuvered patients throughout various parts of the facility in order to perform surgeries. Patient holding and prep was in one area, patient recovery in another and the actual operating rooms in another area. This has now changed. All of the operating/surgical services at Appling HealthCare are now located within an entire wing, or suite as the employees call it, of the hospital and many staff members reported this has greatly improved flow and patient care within the department. The area where surgery is housed currently is located where the old emergency room was located, or on the north side of the campus.

Hospital’s OR gets surgical makeover
Last August the health care system decided to make the needed changes to the department and the renovations were completed in late December. In the operating rooms the system has purchased new anesthesia equipment and a new operating table has been installed in one of the rooms. The second OR’s table was replaced a couple of years ago.
The new surgical suite features two updated operating rooms, a prep area, a recovery area, an endoscopy/procedure room, and finally a separate waiting room with a separate counseling room for families of patients undergoing surgery to meet privately with surgeons.
So why is this needed many may ask? Appling HealthCare performed 891 surgeries/procedures in 2012 and the number is only going to increase with the addition Dr. Jeffery Butler. Butler, a general surgeon, joined the system in late 2012. He joins other surgeons Dr. Robert Wynn and Dr. Alex Wynn. The estimated total investment by the system in this renovation was $76,000.00.
It was evident during this reporter’s visit that the surgical suite is very busy and many of the updated rooms and facilities could not be viewed during the visit due to a number of ongoing procedures. The areas viewed were very impressive and should result in better, and more convenient care for patients.

Appling county hospital OR has the best team one could ask for. They are caring and strive to make all patients feel comfortable and well informed as to what to expect during their surgery and after care. If I ever need surgery i would trust them to give the best care.
