I read a police report a few days back that was actually printed in The Brunswick News last April. The report shared that a Brunswick woman had her purse stolen from inside her car at her residence. Now you may be asking why I have no pity for this woman. Take a gander at this report:
Purse stolen from woman at residence
A woman said she noticed her purse missing from her car just before 5:00 p.m. Sunday. The car was parked at her residence on Hornet Drive, Brunswick. The woman said the car had been locked, and the purse was in the back seat.
The purse was valued at $400.00, her wallet was valued at $200.00 and she said there was $800.00 cash in the purse, according to the police report. Also missing were the woman’s food stamp cards.
Did you notice the last paragraph? I wonder how many hard-working taxpayers in this community have a $400.00 purse, a $200.00 wallet and $800.00 cash in their purse or wallets? One could also question how this woman, who is using food stamps, could possibly afford such luxuries?
So here is my opinion in a nutshell. Our forefathers of this great country proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
In the latter portion of this profound statement these men believed that we have certain unalienable rights, from our Creator no less, and they are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The statement does not say life, liberty and “guaranteed” happiness. This is where I see the problem. In the 236 years since this document was crafted some people of this great country have come to believe that they are owed happiness from their government.
I believe that life is what we make it. If we love God, work hard, respect others and pursue being a good and contributing member of society we will have the tools to attain happiness.
President John F. Kennedy probably said it best, “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” So what are you doing for your country? Are you going to be a blood-sucking leech living off the hard work of others with no self-respect or pride or are you going to be a contributor?
I know there are many out there that can’t provide for themselves due to some sort of disability or ailment and we should help these citizens, but there are many out there that are more than capable of working and providing for their families, yet they choose to be leeches.
In 1969 there were 2,878,000 people on food stamps in this country. In 2000 there were 17,194,000 on the system. Today there are approximately 45,000,000 people on food stamps at a cost of nearly $80 billion per year.
And I had a feeling from your first paragraph that it would be the article you were speaking of!!!!
It took a few days to get an answer but this story was in fact printed in the Brunswick, Georgia newspaper on April 3rd, according to a reporter who works there.
I found this by searching for the term 'Hornet Drive' which was mentioned in the article. Brunswick, Georgia popped up. I looked for Brunswick newspapers. I found one but I couldn't access the archives without a paid subscription so I found the Editor and Reporter email addresses. The first one I emailed, the local editor ignored my request, but the reporter,
