According to Appling County Sheriff Benny Deloach and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation an arrest warrant for murder was secured on January 8 for the arrest of Jonathan Courson, 26, of Baxley, for the murder of his wife Mandy Courson, age 28, of Baxley.
The incident took place at their home located on Corey Street in Oak Ridge Subdivision on January 4 and was originally reported as a home invasion resulting in a murder. Courson told investigators that two men entered the home, tied he and his wife up and pillaged the home. Local authorities arrived on the scene shortly after a panic alarm from the residence was received by the Appling County 911-Call Center at 6:36 a.m.
The Baxley News-Banner spoke to Deloach on Monday and was informed that Courson is being held at the Appling County Detention Center. A bond hearing is set to be held on February 1 at 9:30 a.m.
Deloach also stated that an autopsy has been done, but no official cause of death has been released at this time.

Balloon ceremony held to honor families
This past Saturday, January 12, the community came together to show support for the Carter and Courson families. A balloon release ceremony was held in memory of Mandy Carter Courson and in honor of her daughter.
Pastor Rick Brown spoke a few words during the ceremony with those in attendance singing the first verse of “Amazing Grace”. Mandy’s daughter released the first balloons in memory of her mother and in unison those in attendance counted down and released the remaining balloons.
