Reaching speeds over 100 mph, a chase that started on U.S. Highway 1 in Appling County ended in Pierce County, on Georgia Highway 32, with officers using what is known as a pit maneuver to get two suspects to stop. On Tuesday, January 8 at approximately 4:00 p.m., Baxley Police received a call from the loss prevention employee at Baxley Walmart in reference to shoplifting. On the way to answer the call the police officer was notified that the shoplifters had left the scene and were reported traveling in a brown Ford Windstar van, with a drive out tag, headed toward U.S. Highway 1 South. It was also reported that the driver of the van was driving erratically.

Three-county high speed chase ends with pit maneuver
The police officer traveled out U.S. 1 South to the Baxley airport and had no contact with the vehicle. However, Appling County Sheriff Deputy Clint Bass, also on lookout for the vehicle, attempted to stop a vehicle matching the description of the van and it was reported that the vehicle would not stop and a high-speed chase ensued. The chase went through the southern portion of Appling County, through Bacon County and ended after Bass and law enforcement from Bacon, Pierce and the Georgia State Patrol performed a pit maneuver on the van pushing it into a ditch in Pierce County. No injuries were reported and minor damage to the vehicles was reported.
The Baxley Police returned to Walmart and learned that the driver of the van, Donald E. Roberson, 60, of Hoboken, and Macie Price, 38, of Waycross, had attempted to shoplift two laptop computers. It was reported in the incident report that Roberson and Price had been in the store looking at the computers and Price returned to the van. Roberson then took two computers through the garden center of the store without paying for them. The computers were valued at approximately $1,300.00. As the loss prevention employee of the store approached the duo, Roberson dropped the computers outside, jumped in the van and sped off. Baxley Police secured warrants for Roberson and Price for shoplifting.
In addition, the Appling County Sheriff’s Office charged Roberson with reckless driving, failure to obey a traffic control device, failure to obey stop signs, DUI/drugs, two counts of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and speeding. Both offenders were transported from Pierce County back to the Appling County Detention Center.
