Buxton struck out two Jackets in the first inning. The only batter to reach was Farris on a two-out line drive that fell from the glove of Josh Barber in center field. Buxton got out of the jam by striking out Jake Lytle to end the inning. The Pirates came to plate in the bottom half of the inning ready to swing the bats. Josh Barber lead off with a line drive that hit the base of the center field fence for a double on the first pitch delivered by Deats. Next batter Byron Buxton swung at the first pitch he saw and popped out. Tyler Avera followed by swinging at the first pitch and grounded out to the infield moving Barber to third. Kyle Miller managed to work the count full and delivered a double to right center to drive home the first Pirate run of the night.
The Jackets would leave one runner on base in the second but failed to score. They threatened again in the top half of the third inning. A leadoff walk was issued to Brett Miles. Two outs later Farris was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Jake Lytle followed with a hard hit single to left field. Miles rounded third trying to score but the Pirates left fielder Justin Javis gunned him down by more than twenty feet at the plate to snuff the threat.
The teams would not seriously threaten to score again until the top of the sixth when the Jackets first baseman Farris reached on an error with one out. Buxton struck out Lytle for the second time in the game. An intentional walk to Allen Browning would put the tying run on second base. Buxton would strike out the Jackets’ catcher Mathew Carter but the ball skipped away from Mathew Shumans and when Shumans tried to throw the batter out at first the ball was thrown past first base to allow the run to score.
The game went into the bottom of the seventh with the score still tied 1-1. After one out senior Kyle Fennell singled. Jeremy Ammons followed with a walk. Devin Causey hit a deep fly ball to the outfield to move the runners up 90 feet. With two outs junior Colby Griffin hit a line drive to the right center field gap to end the game.
Buxton pitched a complete game three-hitter. He struck out ten Yellow Jackets on the night and walked only two.
