Annie “Dorothy” Davis, the first child of the late William H. Smith, Sr. and Nettie Mae Smith was born April 27, 1944 in Baxley. She was and always will be known as Dorothy and Mother Davis. She died Dec. 30, 2012.
Dorothy graduated from Appling County Consolidated High School in 1963. She married her high school sweetheart and they soon relocated from Baxley to New Jersey. During their 49 years together they raised seven children. In 1964 she joined the Gospel Tabernacle C.O.G.I.C. (Presently known as Cotton Temple of C.O.G.I.C) under the leadership of Bishop C.H. Cotton.) She was a faithful member of Cotton Temple, a prayer warrior, Sunday school and Y. P. W.W. teacher and a laborer for Christ. Under the leadership of Elder Embria Sconiers, she was appointed Church Mother and had a great love for the youth. During her journey she was elevated to Missionary and continued to serve the Lord. In July 2009, she moved back to Baxley and joined St. John C.O.G.I.C. under the leadership of Elder W. H. Solomon, where she remained a faithful member and continued to teach Sunday school, which she loved until the Lord called her home.
In addition to her father, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Sally Jean Riddick.
Survivors include her loving husband, Benjamin Franklin Davis; six daughters, Terri Herk (Bernard), Tawanna Davis, Tonya Jones (Keith), Dawn Gibson (Anthony), Tyeshia Cultess (Bernard) and Tamara Evans (Kevin); one son, William “Reggie” Davis (Karine); her mother, Nettie Mae Smith; six sisters, Edna Reaves, Shirley Robinson, Ruby Ryals, Verna Walker (Rickey), Jackie Burkett (Ronald) and Joyce Keller; one brother, William “Pete” Smith, Jr. (Vanessa); four sisters-in-law, Clara Mae Russell, Willie Lee Allen, Jenny Burks (Harold), Alice Davis; one brother-in-law, Vernon Riddick, Sr.; three sisters-in-love, Irene Archie, Rose Davis and Joyce White; sixteen grandchildren, two great-grands, two god children, Persian Gourdine and Terrell Martin and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5 at First African Baptist Church in Baxley with Elder Gregory Russell presiding. Eulogy was given by Elder Embria W. Sconiers. Reflections given by the Rev. W. H. Solomon. Interment followed in Old Field Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Keith Jones, Bernard Herk, Kevin Evans, Bernard Cultess, Anthony Gibson and Jamil Green.
Honorary pallbearers were Mary Reddish, Vandola Barney and the 1963 Class of Appling County Consolidated High School.
Musical selections were rendered by Barbara Porter, Staci Sconiers and Kimberly Rooks.
Arrangements were under the direction of Brown Funeral Home.
