After a few more practices the Mites traveled to Eastman to compete in the Thanksgiving Invitational Tournament. Drawing a talented Hawkinsville for their first game the Appling County Mite Boys quickly took charge and kept control of the game to claim the victory 26-6. This set the Mite Boys up to play for the championship against the host team of Dodge County; with only two teams left out of eight left to play for the title, the stands sat with anticipation. The Mite Boys took the field with the support of a very large Appling County crowd cheering them on. The game proved to be a battle as Appling County faced a much larger and favored Dodge County. These young men quickly scored eight points in the first quarter to take the lead, and after stopping Dodge County on their drive, the game turned into a defensive battle with neither team allowing the other to score, and with two minutes left in the game Appling put up eight more on a tight-end pass to clinch the championship 16-0.
Traveling back home to get a few more practices in, these young men were ready for District Playoffs with a lot of confidence. The championship game would prove to be an intense game that kept all the fans on the edge of their seat. It would be Appling taking on Long County once more. Appling would score quick in the first quarter to take the lead 6-0; then the defensive took over for both teams and with 28 seconds left in the first half Long scored on an interception to take the lead 8-6.
Going into the second half of the game Appling was behind for the first time of the season. Fans cheered with worried looks on their faces wondering if these young men could fight their way back. Starting in the second half these young men proved themselves by taking the ball and driving with power down the field to regain the lead 12-8. Not to be out done, the defense quickly drove the Long County offense backwards and forced Long to punt the ball. Appling took over the ball with four minutes left in the game, and after a few penalties found themselves 4th and long. Appling chose to go for it and with a tight-end pass for a touchdown they closed the game out 18-8, claiming the district championship.
The Appling County Recreation Department is very proud of these young men. Appling County can be proud because these young men showed a lot of character and integrity on and off the field. Appling Recreation wants to give a big thank you to the parents for allowing your children to play in our organization and to our community for all your support you give to the Appling County Recreation Dept.
