Waunell Denison Thornton, 86, of Bristol, died Saturday, November 24, 2012 in Golden Living Center after an extended illness. She was a member of Ritch Missionary Baptist Church and the Ladies Sunday School Class. For many years, she enjoyed operating the family business, Thornton’s Grocery Store in Bristol, farming, gardening and being with her family. She was predeceased by her husband, James Harvey Thornton; several siblings, Wilton “Witt”, Waldo “Wallie”, Jay, Eugene “Dink” Denison and Angie Denison Thornton.
Survivors are four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ruth and Willis Griffis of Jesup, Juanita Thornton Dykes Narvaez of Waycross, Shirley and Ronnie Thornton of Odum, Lori and Hayden Rozier II of Screven; a sister, Oretha Reese Denison Lewis of Pembroke; a sister-in-law, Ruby Thornton of Bristol; grandchildren, Mary Christina and Ronnie Smith of Brunswick, James Robert Dykes IV and wife, Pamela of Waynesboro, Christopher Michael and Lauren Dykes of Lizella, Angela Candace Thornton of Odum, Randall Rozier, III and Lorielle Rozier, both of Screven; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Derwin Griffin and Durwood Miller officiating. Interment was in Antioch Cemetery in Appling County.
Active pallbearers were Randall Rozier, III, Mathew Vaughn, J.W. Boyette, Robert Eunice, Joey Boyette, Mark Boyette, Robbie Dykes, Michael Dykes and Dwight Thornton.
Honorary pallbearers were her neighbor and best friend, Naomi Wynn and her roommate, Susie Thornton, her friend, Betty Leggett, the staff of Golden Living and the staff of Heartland Hospice.
Visitation was from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home.
