Forty-six children in the United States are diagnosed with cancer every day and seven of those children die daily.
The Mission of the Childhood Cancer Awareness Group of Coffee County: is to provide financial assistance, emotional and spiritual support and information for families of children with cancer; provide funding to other childhood cancer research agencies and search for a cure; and raise public awareness of the disease and advocate on behalf of children who are affected in the Coffee County area.
Despite its rarity and the major advances in treatment and supportive care, cancer is still the second leading cause of death in children younger than 15 years old (after accidents).
Cancers in children often are hard to recognize right away because the symptoms can overlap with much more common illnesses or injuries.
About 13,500 children and teenagers in North America will be diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and approximately 3000 of those will die. Unfortunately, CHILDHOOD CANCER RATES HAVE BEEN RISING SLIGHTLY FOR THE PAST FEW DECADES.
Much progress has been made in treating childhood cancers in recent decades and many of these cancers can now be cured. It is through people like you that these children have a chance.
Public awareness, monies for research and the support of your community is essential.
Because of research, there are major advances in treatment and more children treated for cancer are now surviving into adulthood.
Unlike many cancers of adults, there are no lifestyle-related risk factors that are known to influence a child’s risk of getting cancer.
The types of cancers that develop in children are very different from the types that develop in adults.
Childhood cancers are often the result of DNA changes in cells that take place very early in life, sometimes even before birth.
Children are our most precious resource and our hope for the future. Without funds for research these children have no future.
Too many families in our area have been touched by cancer and its consequences. We must work together to control and ultimately defeat this destructive disease.
