During the past year, two Appling County women, Kai Bowen and Sunshine Carter of Baxley, have been an integral part of the South Georgia College’s groundbreaking new competitive swim team – The Swimming Tigers! These ladies recently returned from a week-long trip to Buffalo, NY where they competed in the NJCA (National Junior College Association) finals.
Coached by C. M. Jenkins, this group of talented athletes from all over Georgia managed to earn a ranking in the top ten junior college swim teams across the nation.
Their achievement is especially noteworthy due to the fact that this is a first-year competitive team. For the past seven months these athletes have been grooming for last week’s competition with twice-daily practice sessions – sometimes beginning at 6:00 a.m. before their college classes began. Throughout this demanding swim season, both women managed to make the dean’s list as well.
Kai is the daughter of Tommy and Karen Bowen and the granddaughter of Evelyn Collins. A member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Kai will complete her A.A. in Psychology this spring. She plans to transfer to Georgia Southern University in the fall to continue her studies.
Sunshine is the daughter of John and Patrice Carter and is majoring in nursing. In addition to her accomplishments on the swim team, she is also a member of SGC’s cross-country track team.
