It was noted that these a maximum projected costs for the additions. The additions would be funded through Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST) funds. The school system will now be able to host region/sanctioned track events.
Other business
On a split vote, the board did not approve a recommendation, made by Superintendent Sacrlett Copeland, to hire Kandiss Taylor as the new school counselor for Appling County High School (ACHS). Board member Minnie Barnes voted in favor of hiring Taylor. M.C. Barlow and Randy Sellers voted against the measure. Randy Crawford abstained from voting on the matter.
The board accepted the resignations of Leslie Belcher and Arden Powell.
Board members accepted a recommendation from Copeland to open one Appling County Middle School teacher position and a clerical position at ACHS. The board also approved to open one new teacher position at Fourth District Elementary due to increased enrollment at the school.
The board accepted leave of absence requests from Shirley Altman and Glenda Reeves.
Information items were presented for board review concerning eBoard Modules, GSBA Strategic Planning, a fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network, Georgia Department of Education Bond Buses, Energy Education monthly update, a Medicaid billing proposal, Middle School Athletic Director, lay coaches for the 2012-2013 school year and minutes from prior meetings. These items are to be approved at the board’s monthly meeting to be held on Monday, August 13.
Board members received positive news concerning Summer School test scores and GKids trend data which showed that Appling County kindergarten classes out performed the state in areas.
