Effective July 1, 2012 the Georgia Department of Driver Services (GDDS) have implemented additional requirements for individuals to be able to receive Driver’s Licenses and Identification Cards.
The new procedures are a result from the Federal Real ID Act of 2005 to enhance the integrity and security of Driver’s Licenses and Identification Cards, added security against personal identity theft and ensures that the GDDS has most current information.
Changes to Requirements for Driver’s Licenses and IDs Listed
The new procedures will require the following documents to be presented before anyone can receive a renewal or new card:
• At least one (1) original or certified document to prove your Primary Identity. Documents can include: Valid, Unexpired US Passport, an Original or Certified Copy of a US Birth Certificate/Amended Birth Certificate filed with the State Office of Vital Statistics or equivalent agency in the Applicant’s state of birth (“Keepsake” birth certificates issued by hospitals are not acceptable), Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by the U.S. Department of State, Certificate of Naturalization issued by Department of Homeland Security, Certificate of Citizenship, SSA Numident Record (Applicant’s date of birth must be prior to January 1, 1940) or Original U.S. Military Discharge Papers (Applicant’s date of birth must be prior to January 1, 1940).
• At least one (1) document to prove your Social Security Number(SSN).
Documents can include: Social Security Card (Original, laminated original or copy), W-2 Form with Applicant’s name and full or partial SSN, SSA-1099 Form with Applicant’s name and full or partial SSN, Non-SSA 1099 Form with Applicant’s name and full or partial SSN, Pay Stub with Applicant’s name, address and full or partial SSN, SSN Denial Letter/SSA Refusal Letter, SSA Print-out containing office stamp and SSA employee signature as well as Applicant’s name and SSN, 1-797C with Applicant’s name, demographic info and SSN (for non-citizens only), Federal/State Tax Return with Applicant’s name and SSN (including Dependents), Medicare/Medicaid card with Applicant’s name and SSN or Social Security Annual Statement.
• At least two (2) documents to prove your Residential Address.
Documents can include: Utility bill issued within the last sixty (60) days for services installed at your residential address (ex. water, sewer, gas, electricity, cable/satellite TV, internet, telephone/cell phone, or garbage collection), Financial statement for bank/credit union account, investment account, credit card account, or loan/credit financing issued within the last sixty (60) days, Current, valid rental contract/agreement and/or rent payment receipts issued within the last sixty (60) days (includes rental agreement/leases for a home, apartment, mobile home, dorm, extended stay motel, retirement/assisted living home, and letter from a shelter), Employer verification, including, but not limited to, one of the following: Paycheck or paycheck stub, Letter from your employer on company letterhead, W-2 for current or preceding calendar year, Military orders
For minors and dependents, unexpired GA driver’s license, permit, or ID card issued to parent, guardian, or spouse residing in same household; For dependent parents, unexpired GA driver’s license, permit, or ID card issued to a relative residing in the same household, Health insurance statement or explanation of benefits for claim or a health care bill/invoice, State of Georgia or Federal income tax return or refund check for current or preceding calendar year, Social Security Annual Statement for current or preceding calendar year, Medicare or Medicaid statement, unemployment insurance claims, or WIC, School record or transcript, report card, student loan application, or form DS-1 for current or preceding calendar year, Homeowners insurance policy or premium bill for current or preceding calendar year, Mortgage, payment coupon, deed, escrow statement or property tax bill for current or preceding calendar year, Voter Registration Card, Auto-Insurance Policy with Applicant’s name and address, Auto-Registration with Applicant’s name and address, Unexpired TWIC card (Transportation Worker Identification Credential), Unexpired Firearms License (Gun Permit), Unexpired Merchant Marine License, I-797A, I-797C, Other Documents issued by the Federal/State/Municipal Government, Refugee Address Verification Affidavit (DS-20) (a second document for verification of residency is not required with this document), Department of Corrections Residency Verification Form (DS-752) (a second document for verification of residency is not required with this document).
Other requirements are also required for Transfer of Out-Of-State DL/ID (previously issued DL/ID or Certified MVR), Commerical Driver’s License (CDL Application, Medical Certification (if required for self-certification code) and TSA Background Check for Hazardous Materials Endorsement, if applicable) and Teen Driver (ADAP Certificate, Georgia DDS Certificate of Attendance form notarized from your school (valid 30 days; during the summer vacation this form is valid from May until August or until school starts), Valid Learner’s License, Certificate from approved Driver’s Education School or the certificate from an approved online program and / or the completed Parent guide that fulfills the on-the-road requirement, Signed Affidavit by Parent/Guardian [40 hours on-the-road driving experience including sixhours at night]; the parents will sign the Affidavit at the DDS so you do not have to bring this with you as it will be provided and Insurance Card and Registration for the vehicle you will use to take your driving test).
