Dennie Roy “Papa Dennie” Simmons, 67, died Friday, June 29, 2012 at Appling Healthcare System. Simmons was born July 29, 1944 to the late Linton Lee and Ora Lee Reeves Simmons. He was a member of Melton’s Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a member of Ironworkers Local 709 and Holmesville Masonic Lodge #195 F & AM. Dennie was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Vietnam. He was a loving husband, papa, father and friend.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Simmons of Baxley; one daughter and son-in-law, LaJune and James Bellah of Baxley; one sister and brother-in-law, Melba and Ben Blankenship of Melrose, FL; two brothers-in-law, Timmy Scott and wife, Midge, of Baxley and W. L. Scott and wife, Wanda, of Sylvania; three grandchildren, Austin Bellah, Dustin Bellah and Jacob Bellah; nieces and nephews, Randy and Lynne Crummey, Mike and Carletta Crummey, Janice and Jack Crawford, Dewayne and Lynn Crummey and Becky, Wayne Crummey and Erick Kneeland; and several great nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 3 at Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ricky Rushing and Ronnie Rentz officiating. Interment followed in Melton’s Chapel Cemetery with Military rites.
Active pallbearers were Michael McDaniel, Wilbur Scott, Cliff Hardee, Joseph Williams, Danny Wayne Faircloth and Stewart Campbell.
Honorary pallbearers were Local Union 709, staff of Appling Oncology, Holmesville Masonic Lodge #195 F & AM, staff of Appling ER, Dr. Teresa Cezar, Southern Care Hospice, members of Terry Todd’s Coffee Club, Altamaha Volunteer Fire Department, Don Boutwell, Roy and Bonnie Lewis, Donnie Lewis, Chris Lewis, Ronnie Lewis, Lynn Watts, and Freddie and Donna White family.
Musical selections were rendered by Roseann Lawson.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
