Dear Editor and fellow citizens,
Attention fellow citizens of Appling County; my name is Sarah Leggett Tanaka, an insulin dependent diabetic. In April I had a toe to get infected and I went to see my doctor as usual. They said I would have to see another. I never get to see my doctor. The doctor continuously changed my antibiotics. I told him time after time I needed an x-ray and probably antibiotics through an I.V. He never did either; another toe became infected and moved into the foot and up my leg. I still never got to see my doctor. He never one time saw my foot in the month this went on. On Friday, 5-25-12, I went to the ER. The doctor there never examined my foot just said he was going to change my antibiotic and give me a pain shot. I said, “No, if you can’t help me I am out of here.” It’s a shame when you get sick and can’t even see your doctor and none of the others care.

I left Appling Co. ER and went to the Jeff Davis Co. ER and got the help I needed. The doctor there started an I.V. and admitted me. All tests showed gangrene. The doctor told me on Monday he was calling in a surgeon and said I could lose some toes and maybe some of the foot. A lot of prayers began to go up for me. The surgeon came on Tuesday and cut a toe so it could drain. God healed the gangrene. I came home the next day. I’m on the mends. I still have all my toes and foot. Thanks to Dr. David L. Turfler and Jeff Davis Hospital staff you did what needed to be done. Thank God for the healing that He did.
In the future when I need medical help I’ll be driving right out of Appling County going elsewhere.

I will have to say (that) the EMS Service and the hospital ER did a wonderful job in taking care of my husband when he became ill on Dec. 30, 2011. Tests were immediately done to diagnose his problems. He spent several days in AHCS and received excellent care from the staff and the doctors. We are so thankful, and are blessed to have a wonderful, local hospital.
