The Appling County Retired Educators met on April 4, 2012 at the Baxley Church of God Fellowship Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Patsy Buchannan. The inspiration was given by Carolyn Wade. She read “The 1915 Rules for Teachers”. James Twiggs led in the Pledge to the Flag. Carol Surrency and Carolyn Wade led the group in singing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and “The More We Get Together”.
President Buchannan welcomed the following guests STAR Student Taylor Dominy and her parents, Sandy and Andy Dominy, STAR Teacher Gail Carter, new retirees Genia White, Catherine Carter and Sandra Ballenger, principals, Dr. Edie Baxley and Greg Williams, Superintendent Scarlett Copeland, two Hazlehurst REA members Joann Dawson and Dorothy Pope, Angela Isom and Mike Zarem.
The minutes from the March 2012 meeting were read by the secretary and approved. Elizabeth Dunn gave the treasurer’s report and it was approved.
Eveline Peacock she mailed one thank you note, four get well cards and one sympathy card.
Val Rump reported seventy members turned in a total of 8,979 volunteer hours. She reminded everyone that the volunteer hours are due at the end of February. Rob Rump reported that 98 Spotlight ads have been sent in with a possible two more being sold for a total of 100 ads. The good news from James Twiggs was that the legislators had gone home.
Joy Connelley reported that the students had collected a total of $4,187.16 for the Children’s Miracle Network. Joy thanked the members who helped her count the money.
Sonia Williams gave the report on the items collected for the food bank. One hundred twenty-one pounds of food and $28 was collected at the March meeting. A total of 1315 pounds of food have been donated with Appling County Retired Educators volunteering 51 hours during the month of March at the food bank. Sonia thanked everyone for their donations.
President Buchannan presented the new officers for the term 2012-2014. They are Secretary Gretchen Miles and Treasurer Elizabeth Dunn. The President-elect office has not been filled.
Buchannan recognized STAR student Taylor Dominy with a certificate and also STAR Teacher Gail Carter. Also recognized for retirement and presented certificates were Catherine Carter, Genia White, Elaine Williams and Sandra Ballenger.
Mike Zarem from Teacher Retirement Services was the speaker for the April meeting. There are 222,000 active TRS members and the average age is 68. Georgia TRS is in the top 10 in the country and assets are 52nd in the world.
Patsy thanked Stan Brobston for driving Mattie Hilton and Valeria Lewis, two emeritus members, in the Relay for Life parade.
There were 62 in attendance.
The goody bags were supplied by Connie Deen and the Special Education Class at Appling County Middle School.
Carolyn Wade gave the blessing for the meal.
The meeting was adjourned by the president.
