The Appling County #786 Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, held their regular meeting at the lovely home of Glenda Quinn with five members and two prospective members in attendance.
They were Deloris Bowers, Martha Dykes, Joan Cauley, Glenda Quinn, Joyce Tillman, Barbara Baker and Sandra Wi ngate.
After a time of fellowship and a delicious lunch prepared by the hostess, President Quinn opened the meeting.
Mrs. Bowers recited the Lord’s Prayer; President Quinn led the group in the pledges to the American Flag, the Georgia Flag and the salute to the UDC Flag. She also led the UDC Ritual. The Official Prayer of UDC was led by Mrs. Bowers.
Discussion was held about the placement of Confederate Flags at the graves of Confederate Soldiers in the cemeteries by UDC members. Everyone also commented on the great response and attendance at the special program in March at Towns Bluff Park.
In the absence of Teresa Howard who was scheduled to present the program, President Quinn presented a most interesting and informative program on Sam Davis, “Hero of the Confederacy”.
Sam was from Tennessee, only 21 years old and was hanged by the Federals. The first Confederate Medal of Honor was posthumously bestowed upon him one hundred eleven years after the war ended.
The nominating committee gave the following report of 2012-2014 officers: President Martha Dykes, Vice President Ellen Luciano, Secretary/Treasurer Deloris Bowers, Chaplain Joan Cauley and Registrar Glenda Quinn. These officers will be installed at the May 14 meeting.
Treasurer Deloris Bowers reported that the UDC Magazines for chapter members had been ordered and the contributions for the year had been sent.
She also mentioned the ten year certificate that President Quinn presented to Charter member Hulda Baker on April 9.
Mrs. Bowers discussed the chapter giving all the Charter members a ten-year certificate, which everyone agreed was a good idea.
Mrs. Bowers told about a recent trip she made to Fort Pulaski and the monument that is being built there representing the “Immortal Six Hundred”.
The next meeting will be May 14 at 1:00 p.m. at Sarah’s in the City Restaurant in Baxley.
