Appling Christian’s baseball team advanced through the first two rounds of the Georgia Christian Athletic Associations playoffs this past week. Monday was a single game series against the number four seed from Region one, the Challengers of Shiloh Hills Christian Academy from Kennesaw.
Monday’s game lasted only five innings with the mercy rule applied and the Eagles winning 13 to 3. Rex Cox, the starter for the Eagles, pitched all five innings allowing 3 runs on six hit with six strikeouts and three walks. The Eagle offense hit well throughout the line up with eight of the nine starters recording at least one hit in the game. Rex Cox led in hits as he went three for four with two singles and a double. The games leader in RBI’s was Andrew Phillips with four.
Friday the ACA Eagles moved into the semifinal round and faced the Knights of Peoples Baptist from McDoungh. The Knights entered the playoffs as a number three seed. The Eagles would sweep the Knights in the two game series with a score of sixteen to zero in game one and a score of eighteen to zero in game two.
Bryce Livingston pitched the first game picking up a win while facing only nine batters in a mercy rule shorted game. The only Knight to reach base was hit by a pitch in the first inning and was then erased on a double play. Livingston struck out three, walked none, and allowed no runs or hits.
Eagle pitching continued to be strong with Rex Cox getting the start in game two of the series. Cox pitched two innings facing ten batters, sticking out five, walking one and allowing no runs and two hits. Andrew Phillips would face the final three batters of the three-inning game sticking out the side.
The Eagle hitting for the two game contests was prolific. Andrew Phillips totaled five hits on the day followed by Zach Carter with four. Rex Cox, Brandon Horton, Bryant Phillips, and Dylan Colson all had three hits each. Andrew Phillips also lead in RBI’s with eight followed by Bryant Phillips who had four and Rex Cox with three. Brandon Horton and Bryce Livingston had two RBI’s apiece. Zach Carter, Corey Reagin and Cole Livingston, each had one RBI.
The Eagles now advance to the GCAA conference title series on Friday afternoon. The venue is still undecided at this time but the opponent is set. The Eagles will face the number one seed from Region One, Barnes Academy from Hartwell. The Eagles played Barnes in a double header very early in the season and split with a win each. Barnes was also the opponent for the Eagles in last year’s semifinal round with the Eagles coming out on top to games to one.
This should prove to be an exciting series to determine the GCAA Champion for 2012.
