Hilda Burke, 80, of Jesup, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012 in Wayne Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. The Appling County native had lived in Jesup the past 56 years. She was a member of Jesup First Baptist Church and the Retired Educators Association. She volunteered with the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Wayne County Peachy Clean Committee for many years. Her husbands, Watson Burke and Rufus Roberson preceded her in death along with a daughter-in-law, Willeen Burke.
Survivors are one daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Shad Atkinson of Jesup; one son, Hugh Burke of Douglas; one grandson, Ethan and Megan Atkinson of Waycross; one granddaughter, Garland Burke of Douglas; one great-granddaughter, Kallyn Atkinson of Waycross; one special sister-in-law, Anna Lee Lightsey; three step-sisters, Sandra and Donald Westberry, Sarah and Ron Garner, Ellen Mullis, all of Jesup; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, April 12, at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. J.E. Blanton, Shad Atkinson and Stan Todd officiating. Interment was in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Hugh Burke, Shad Atkinson, Ethan Atkinson, J.C. Arnette, James Brown, and Al Copeland.
