Author coming to Baxley
Dr. Maxwell Taylor Courson, author of Dixie Mafia Gangster, The Audacious Criminal Career of Willie Foster Sellers, will give a reading and autograph copies of his book on Thursday, April 19. A reading will be held from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Appling County Public Library. Immediately following the reading (at 8:00 p.m.), a reception and book signing will be held at the Baxley Lions Club Building. The event is co-sponsored by The Friends of the Library and the Appling County Heritage Center.
If you can not attend the reading or book signing, Courson will also be at Hardees on Friday morning at 8:00.
Dr. Courson lived in Baxley for a number of years. He graduated from Baxley High School with Bernice Warnock Brannen, Stan Brobston, Joyce Crosby Tillman, Annette Miles Ware, and about 70 others the last year it was Baxley High School. Courson has done a tremendous amount of research and a lot of the book is from Foster Sellers himself in his own words. At one time, when Sellers was in prison, only three people were allowed to see him. One of them was Max Courson.

Max is a former classmate of mine and has written a wonderful read. Everyone who lives in Baxley or has lived there should read it. I did not know Foster personally but knew of his robberies.
