On Tuesday, March 6, 2,602 voters turned out to vote in the Presidential Primary Preference election. In all, there are 10,541 registered voters in Appling County and this resulted in 24.68 percent turnout.
In the Presidential Primary, incumbent Barack Obama (Democrat) received a total of 281 votes.
Education tax approved
On the Republican side, Newt Gingrich received 1,120 votes, followed by Rick Santorum with 659 votes, Mitt Romney 312 votes and Ron Paul with 97 votes.
A special referendum was also put before voters on the Appling ballot regarding the continuation of the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST). The one percent sales tax measure overwhelmingly passed for the fourth time with 2,074 voting in favor of the continuation compared to 397 votes against the measure.
Qualifying for partisan and non-partisan offices in Appling County will be held May 23 (9:00 a.m. – 4:30 daily except for May 25) through May 25 (9:00 until 12:00 p.m.). The General Primary will be July 31 and the General Election November 6.
