During the Appling County Board of Commissioners regular meeting held on Tuesday, March 6 the Commissioners recognized the family of the late District 3 Commissioner Jasper Tomberlin who were in attendance. A plaque with a photo of Tomberlin was read and given to the family with a second plaque to be placed outside the commission’s meeting room located is the Courthouse Annex.

A motion was made to accept the low bid of $12,600.00 from Milner, Inc to purchase a new microfilm reader for the clerk of court office to replace the current machine. The price includes the reader, computer and service agreement and is a budgeted item. The motion was approved unanimously.
Two quotes were received for the purchase of a new copier for the administration office with the first being for a Cannon from Southeastern Business Machines for $5,195.00 and the second for a Toshiba for $6,195.00. A motion was made by Commissioner Sarah Boatright to accept the low bid with a second by Commissioner Theodore Wilkerson. The purchase is a budgeted item and was approved unanimously.
Information was shared on the position of a Road Department Co-Director. Seven applications were received since the position was advertised in January. A motion was made by Wilkerson with a second by Boatright to close the position until the next budget year. All commissioners approved the motion.
Information was shared about the Oak Street Complex flooring that houses USDA, Tri-County CASA and Seven Rivers. Two quotes were received to replace the current flooring with the first from Carvers Floor Covering for the amount of $19,283.00 and the second from Davis Carpet World for $16,247,02. A motion to approve the low bid and purchase with SPLOST funds was made by Wilkerson with a second by Commissioner Ronnie Rentz. The motion was approved unanimously.
A motion was made by Rentz with a second by Wilkerson to approve the call for a special election to fill the vacant position from District Three (Jasper Tomberlin’s District). Qualifying for the position will be held in May with the special election being held on July 31. All commissioners voted in favor of the motion.
Information was shared by the commissioners that after the recent rain Lake Mayers has filled back up to the spill way. Rentz asked Road Department Director Tommy Davis about the cost to lower Lake Mayers. Davis shared that the total cost to siphon the water out was $9,749.87. The cost includes the cost of the pipe, $3,240.00, which will be stored and would not have to be purchased again if needed.
