The 2012 SPLOST is projected to produce $18 million in revenue for a host of items such as roads and bridges, a new building for Concerted Services/Head Start, a new multipurpose building in the Earnest J. Parker Park, new T-ball fields at the Appling County Recreation Complex and more. If a voter is in favor of SPLOST, they should vote “yes” on the referendum, or if opposed vote “no”.
The second issue to be decided on Tuesday will be whether or not to close Fourth District Elementary. Last year the Appling County Board of Education made a decision to shutter the school, which immediately drew sharp criticism from supporters of the school. A group, the Appling County Citizens for Quality Basic Education (ACCQBE), immediately began the process to reverse the board’s decision and this eventually led to arbitration between the two groups. The two groups could not come to an agreement during arbitration and ACCQBE garnered more than enough signatures from registered Appling voters to send the decision to a countywide referendum on the issue.
On the ballot, the question is asked “Shall the action of the Board of Education of Appling County be approved which provides for the closing of the following school: Fourth District School, as specified in the advertisement referred to in validated petition?” A “yes” vote would mean that you agree with the Appling County Board of Education’s decision to close the school, and a “no” vote would mean that you disagree with the board’s decision and wish to keep the school open.
No matter how you feel about these issues, The News-Banner encourages all registered voters to go to the polls next Tuesday and vote.
