John Barrow, U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 12th District, is planning a visit to Baxley and Appling County, Monday, March 12 as part of a get-acquainted tour of the newly expanded 12th Congressional District.
His plans include a noontime lunch meeting at Apple Dumpling Restaurant on West Parker Street. The Dutch-treat lunch will include a brief address by John and a chance to speak with the congressman.
This year Georgia is adding a congressional district (we’ll have 14 Congressmen after the November elections) and lines around the state are shifting to take in the new region. Appling County will be leaving the 1st District to join the 12th.
Like Appling, which has been tossed from the 8th to the 1st and now into the 12th District, Congressman Barrow is no stranger to shifting district lines. In his eight years in office, his district has been shuffled twice. No matter where they put him, though, the voters have overwhelmingly endorsed his willingness to work and his fiscally conservative approach to government.
John’s Georgia roots run deep. For over seven generations, his family has farmed, taught, preached, and practiced law all across eastern and southeastern Georgia.
He grew up learning the importance of serving his community and standing up for what’s right. John’s father, James Barrow, was a decorated World War II veteran, and his mother, Phyllis Barrow, also served in the armed service during World War II, attaining the rank of Captain. Both were courageous and outspoken leaders in the effort to desegregate the University of Georgia.
John earned degrees in political science and history from the University of Georgia. Later, at only 20 years old, he became one of the youngest members of his class at Harvard Law School. In 1990, after having built and run a successful law practice, John was elected as a charter member of the Athens-Clarke County Commission. He served on the commission for 14 years, voting against every tax increase, working for economic development, fighting for property tax relief for homeowners, and developing innovative programs to improve the quality of life of the people he represents.
In Congress, those are the same values John Barrow fights for every day.
In the House of Representatives, John currently serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee and the Veterans’ Affairs Committee. John is also a member of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition and currently serves as the group’s Policy Co-Chair.
John is the father of two children, James and Ruth and lives in Savannah.
