Baxley Lions Club learns about 24/7 House
As much as many of us would like to be in denial, Appling County has a drug abuse problem. At a recent meeting of the Baxley Lions Club, several of the staff members of the 24/7 House rehabilitation center spoke about their own personal battles with addiction and how they are now helping others. The 24/7 House cannot receive grants from state or federal sources. Their curriculum is faith-based. They have Bible Study every day. They must rely on private donations.
Pete Wright, Lorie Barber, Brandi Stone and Stacy Wade each spoke about his or her own life story: reaching bottom and trying to work themselves back to a productive life. Although coming from good, caring families, they had become hooked on street drugs or on prescriptions drugs. The latter can be just as addictive as street drugs. These staff members feel uniquely qualified to assist others. They know all of the excuses and cop-outs.
There are presently 40 people in residence at 24/7 House. They come from varying backgrounds but are facing many of the same demons. Residents must stay on the premises for 30 days, get a job and contribute thirty percent of their earnings to the rent. As Pete Wright said, “They have come from the end of life to New Life.”
