Dear Editor,
A$ a former full-time re$ident of thi$ beautiful flatwood$ country known a$ Appling County, it i$ difficult for me to fathom how a lifelong re$ident and citizen of $aid county could impo$e the horrific idea of a mega-landfill upon the citizen$ of Appling County.
Thi$ deceptive propo$al wa$ introduced and portrayed a$ $ome $ort of recycling center, which gave the un$u$pecting audience the vi$ion of $omething which would be both beneficial and po$itive for thi$ county as well as good ole Mother Earth. However, futher $tudy reveal$ $omething quite the oppo$ite and very deceptive to u$ “ignorant” country folk. To get a better picture of the full extent of thi$ deception, check out the following web$ite: http://jacksonville.com/news/metro/2009-02-22/story/trail_ridge_landfill_inside_the_fight_for_your_750_million and $ee for your$elve$ what the real motive i$ behind thi$ project.
A$ they $ay: “Every cloud has a $ilver lining”, and what a wake-up call! Fellow Appling Countian$, it i$ time to $ecure legi$lation and the peace of mind that come$ with it, that $uch de$tructive idea$ never land in the lap$ of the commi$$ioner$ of thi$ county again. Look around you at your neighboring countie$ which have zoning ordinance$ and realize why they were not the focu$ of thi$ landfill project. The i$$ue of landfill$ or any other ecologically irre$pon$ible bu$ine$$e$ in Appling County will not be permanently re$olved until thi$ county choose$ to protect it$elf from any entity wi$hing to convert it into a dumping ground.
Call your commi$$ioner$, $ign the petition$ that oppo$e the landfill and $upport the zoning ordinance prohibiting future landfill$ in thi$ county. Vote YES, if it come$ to a referendum to protect the beautiful flatwood$ of Appling County.
If Jack$onville’$ trash pile i$ 300 feet high, let them go for a mile, but a$ for Appling County let the pines grace our skies and: NO MORE DUMPS !

Again, this was about the landfill and not recycling. Yes, Appling County needs to look at recycling, but that is not possible right now because we do not generate enough to be in the business. Perhaps someday, Appling and another county can to join to get this done.
