(Editor’s note: The following is information shared by Appling County Extension Agent Shane Curry at the Baxley/Appling County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting held on Jan. 31 for the Appling County Excellence in Agriculture Award.)
Stevie Smith graduated from Appling County High School in 1973 and is a member of many agriculture related organizations including the Appling County Young Farmers, where he served as president in 1994, Piney Wood’s Cattleman’s Association, Southeast Georgia Cattlemen’s Association, Georgia Cattlemen’s Association, and is President of the Appling County Stockman’s Association. He is also a licensed auctioneer.

Stevie Smith awarded for Excellence in Agriculture
He began working with the stockyards in the 1980’s and managed two weekly sales in Jesup and Blackshear. Stevie currently works with Turner County Stockyards in Ashburn as one of their auctioneers. He also owns and operates S & D Livestock and Goats Sales in Baxley.
With all the things he’s involved in, Stevie still finds time to manage his own farm, which is located in the Red Oak community of Appling County where he also lives. He grows row crops, hay, cattle and goats. He and his family attend Red Oak Baptist church and he currently serves as the Sunday school superintendent. He is the son of Joe and Nola Smith of Baxley and is married to Donna Smith. The couple has two daughters, Rebecca Gardner and Katlyn Smith, and one son in law, Josh Gardner.
Ladies and Gentleman it is indeed my honor to introduce to you tonight, the 2011 Award for Excellence in Agriculture winner, Mr. Steve Smith.

I remember cutting hay and moving cows with Steve. He taught me a great work ethic.
