Dear Jamie,
Our congressman, Jack Kingston, has the power and ability to deliver massive economic stimulus to our district. Yet, for a bizarre calculation of political currents, he seems to be willing to let his district lose jobs, money, and position in world trade to appease the national Republican Party.
“Tell him you’ll support him if he supports us”
Deepening the Port of Savannah is good for all of Georgia. It will create jobs now and in the future, Georgians of all stripes support the effort, and Kingston himself told CSPAN last week that for every dollar spent on the project there would be a return of four and a half dollars.
Kingston sits on the powerful House Appropriations Committee and is himself a senior member of the majority Republican party in the House.
Yet, because the national Republican strategists have labeled anyone who tries to help the folks back home a “Pork Barrel Spender”, Kingston is refusing to request funding for the project. Kingston, and the majority of congressmen, have abandoned all pretense of sense by signing onto a pledge to eliminate so-called “earmarks.”
Jamie, cutting wasteful government spending is in the nation’s best interest, but let’s not toss out the baby with the bathwater. If a project makes good economic sense, if it helps the people, if it means more jobs, if it keeps our area linked into growth, then our Congressman has an obligation to fight tooth and nail for that project.
What is wrong with Jack Kingston? What is wrong with our political system? Indeed, what is wrong with us if we sit by and allow the national Republican party to make our representative scared to help his own people?
I urge the readers of The Baxley News-Banner to write Congressman Kingston and tell him you’ll support him if he supports us.

The only jobs created by the deepening the port of Savannah are Union jobs very tightly control by certain people. This will not benefit this state as a whole. So therefore it is a wise decision to not allow the expenditure. This would only be a special interest earmark. Doing away with unions would be the greatest benefit of the state by returning pride in our work to the work ethic of our citizens, instead of thinking the world owes us a living.
