I’m going to miss his wit
About five or six years ago when my parents were getting ready to retire, I decided to replace the ageing roof on The News-Banner’s building. My dad and I discussed several options including going back with a tar and rock-type roof or go with a modified-type roof, which would be lighter on the building’s structure and more energy efficient. I opted to go with the modified roof, even though the tar-type roof held up for over 25 years.
I knew that Jasper Tomberlin did this kind of work, so I gave him a call to come by the office and look at the roof. I’d never really been around Jasper very much. I knew his brothers Howard and Mark pretty well, but again I didn’t know much about Jasper.
My first impression of Jasper was, “I wonder how much coffee he had to drink this morning?” He was full of life and wide open. His business, Tomberlin Coating, installed the new roof and I believe we’ve got a roof that will last for a long time.
Over the years since, Jasper and I had a number of conversations and usually we both walked away smiling due to the fact that one of us would have a witty comment for the other as the conversations ended. Another strong characteristic that I knew about Jasper was that he was honest. We would sometimes disagree on issues, but I always knew exactly where he stood and also knew that what he said was his honest opinion.
I, like many in this community, am going to miss Jasper, especially our conversations and his wit. To Jane, Jenny, Jessica, Jill, and the entire family, you are in our thoughts and prayers.
