The Appling County Retired Educators met on Dec. 7 at the Baxley Church of God Fellowship Hall. David Williams played Christmas songs on the piano as members and guests signed in. The meeting was called to order by President Patsy Buchannan. Judy Johnson gave the inspiration. She read “The Purpose of Christmas” by Rick Warren. Roscoe Davis led the pledge to the flag. Linda Kay Eunice, Carol Surrency and Carolyn Wade led the group in singing “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, “Silent Night” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” The group especially enjoyed singing The “Twelve Days of Christmas” as Linda Kay had each table perform one of the days of Christmas.
President Buchannan welcomed guests Sonny Dixon, Buck Buchannan, Lisa Lewis and Elmira Bass. The minutes from the November 2011 meeting were read by the secretary and approved. Elizabeth Dunn gave the treasurer’s report and it was approved. Dunn reported the lunches at the November meeting were all paid for by the middle school. A motion was made by James Twiggs to donate $200.00 to the food bank from the money that was made on the raffle of the dolls. This was seconded by Joyce Tillman, voted and carried by the group.
Bob Rump asked everyone who sold ads to pick up a copy of the Spotlight Ad bulletin from the state and give one to each business who bought an ad.
Eveline Peacock was recognized for all she does for the Sunshine committee and was presented a roll of stamps.
Patsy Buchannan introduced Sonny Dixon, news anchor at WTOC in Savannah. Dixon shared stories about his roots and how South Georgia is his home. He entertained the group with tales and songs. Dixon shared with the group how one’s character, spirit, attitude, honesty and a positive disposition are so important in life. One of Sonny’s sayings is “Take care.” Take care of all facets of your life physically and socially. He closed the program by leading the group in singing, “Silent Night.” Joyce Tillman presented Sonny with a Georgia tub filled with homemade goodies from the group along with a Georgia shirt. This got boos from him, as he is a Florida fan, but accepted it with graciousness.
There were 66 in attendance.
Christine Roberson gave the report on the food bank project. Roberson reported that 599 pounds of food have been collected with 87.5 pounds and $18.00 collected at the November meeting.
President Buchannan reminded everyone to fill out his or her volunteer sheets for November.
The door prizes were donated by a local bank. Judy Johnson gave the blessing for the meal, which was prepared by the ladies of the Baxley Church of God and provided by a local bank.
The meeting was adjourned by the president.
