Dear Editor,
In response to the proposed Landfill off of Highway 121 in Appling County - 4th District:
We are property owners near the site and we have been away from Appling County for forty years. We just built our new retirement home in September 2011. One day not long after, when showing our home to some friends, it was mentioned that a landfill or garbage dump was being put within 1? miles of our new home; we were really upset about this. It seems that property owners should have been notified of something like this in advance and it seems that no one, or at least property owners in the area, knew nothing about this until they saw it in the paper. Then a meeting was held and the commissioners voted without meeting with any property owners that I know of. I thought Government was for the people and by the people; it seems that I’m wrong!

It appears that no one cares if property owners around this dump have to stay inside to avoid the smell, worrying about their wells being contaminated by methane gas produced by these dumps. Wayne County for our garbage, if this is correct then garbage would be brought from other counties in Georgia and Florida. Since we don’t need this for our garbage then this is just a project for money with no concern for Appling County residents and property owners.
This land is not even suitable for a landfill. It is farmland and wetland that will need to be dug to dump the garbage in. A bad odor will fill the atmosphere, water supplies will be in jeopardy, trash on the highways, trucks in and out 24-7, rats, flies and buzzards. Let me ask anyone that reads this or knows about this, would you like this to be close to your new home or any home to bring property values down 33%? Or maybe if you wanted to sell, no one would want to spend their money on a home near a garbage dump. I would not and no one else would either. Would taxes be less because property values are less?
This may seem good to the people who are to gain from this project; maybe they should put it in their own backyard if it is so good for the community. One other thing if this project is approved by Appling County Commissioners, is Appling County responsible for any problems that may occur, such as the contaminating of Reedy Creek that runs to the Satilla River or well water being contaminated? Other counties have had to pay out millions in law suits for problems that occur because of landfills, this will all be out of all the Appling County taxpayers’ pockets also trash on roads and upkeep of roads will be the responsibility of the county.

I have a suggestion. Why don't they put this facility on the large piece of land they have between Old Surrency Rd. and Highway 341 just outside of Baxley? It seems like it would be a much better fit. The property doesn't have a creek that borders it. It would have much better access, being that close to the highway. Then they won't have to ride all the way across the county to get a wiff of all of that wonderful garbage.
